When it comes to weddings we are often asked if the Mother of the bride or groom, needs to wear a hat for the big occasion?
Well, it is a matter for the Bride to set the dress code, particularly for the Mother of the bride. However, that being said, we would encourage both the mother of the bride or groom to wear a headpiece as they have a clear role to play in the celebration, and a hat or fascinator will complete the look beautifully, particularly when it comes to the photographs.
Our key message when providing a complete service for the Mother of the Bride & Groom is simple, you should always feel comfortable and confident with your look. We consider comfort as one of our top tips when it comes to deciding on your headwear and accessories, especially if it’s a long day with lots of pictures being taken.
Regarding suitable headwear. The outfit you wear on the day should always be the main focus. The guiding principle for the Mother of the Bride or Groom is that the outfit doesn’t need to be overpowered by a headpiece or hat. So, finding the right headpiece that suits you, complements your outfit and works really well for the occasion. Also, if you’re not used to wearing anything on your head then you need to make sure you are going to be comfortable on the day.
- Top Tip – Finding something that suits your face shape will allow you to feel confident. Plus, if you don’t feel comfortable wearing a hat then it is best to avoid one and go for a smaller fascinator.
Another thing to consider when deciding whether to wear a hat is the location. If you are going to a ‘posh’ do, then you may wish to wear a hat. If the wedding is more ‘casual’, a smaller fascinator or headpiece would be better suited.
However informal a wedding, unless otherwise directed most photographers will shoot the traditional group photos of the bride and groom with their parents.
- Another Top Tip – Exercise consideration in your hat choice, your role is to complement and support the bride and not upstage her! – Avoid a show stopping creation! A hat or fascinator does not have to be flamboyant to create an impact.
